EXPOSE: Why Mahela REALLY gave up the captaincy

with one comment

So I’m sitting in at Talk Leadership: Colours of Courage (11 June 2010) and Mahela Jayawardene is speaking. Pre-empting the question, he promises to reveal to the audience why he really quit the captaincy.

I’m paraphrasing here, so don’t sue me:

“There were two reasons;

One, there were things beyond my control and I got the feeling that I wasn’t wanted. So that affected my decision.

But most importantly, I looked at the three captains before me – Sanath, Marvan and for a short time, Hashan. What’s the common factor there?”

[Pause]

“…They’re losing their hair!”

[Laughter]

“Seriously, I was going bald! So I thought Kumar has such a good head of hair, I’m sure he can handle it from here onwards.”

I dunno about the other people in the audience, but I thought that Mahela got the loudest applause (it’s hard to say, when you’ve got Dian Gomes in the list of presenters…)

  1. I was there too and I thought he was brilliant and handled the questions so well. Captain or no captain I would hire him anyday!!
